Advanced Art 2023

In this page I will be showing assignments I had chosen to work on in Advanced art, as well as some College level assignments we were lucky enough to do in the year 2023. This class was a great experience to learn more on sculpture, face shapes, and carving.

Accordion Sketchbook

In this assignment I had given to myself for my independent study, I had the idea of showing different sceneries of nature using different shades of one color. Each environment is different according to its color, which gives each page a unique look. Apart of the real-life nature inspiration, I had gotten inspiration from fantasy worlds, so I decided to add in my own fantasy element to this assignment.

X Artwork

Inspired by the paper sculpture technique "slits and slots," I decided to put it to the test by merging the technique with traditional art, so the X artwork was created. The story idea I had behind this artwork was one I had created: A singer from an underwater city gets kidnapped by a cult from the overworld and a few random top fans go looking for her. They meet one by one as they follow clues, and then they all meet at the place the singer is kept, but they don't know that. The flower and eye banner represent the cult who kidnapped the popular pop star, while the poster for a concert and the portrait represent the singer.

Pixel Art Weaved

Pixel art has been around for a long time, mainly in the digital realm. Though when I saw someone creating pixel art from blocks of wood, I thought to myself "what else can make pixel art interesting?" Thats when the idea to merge weaving and pixel art into one. To test this out I weaved the fabric strips to give depth to each square, then used paint to give it a rough texture when felt. In the end I would say this project I had given myself turned out amazingly, and I would try a bigger piece next time I would do this.

Oar

Given an oar that had chipping paint and very old was very hard to be creative with. That was at first, as the idea of giving a burst of color popped into my mind. Instead of it fully being one beautiful landscape, I would have a brown base, but colorful shapes and striped wrapping the oar to give life to it. Brown as the base, blue waters wrapping around the oar, then pink and yellow dots decorating the big spaces of brown. I wanted to give the feel of fantasy, and I did that by giving it an illusion that water was flowing around the oar, but also colors illuminated parts of the land around it to give it a mystic, and unnatural feel to it.

Human Petina Statue

In our class of Advanced Art we were given the rare opportunity to be able to weld our own armatures, build up the muscle mass with aluminum foil, and sculpt a human out of modeling clay. My inspiration behind my piece was one of my first digital artworks of 2023, a human floating upwards. Though it did not turn out the way I had envisioned it, I would entirely do this project again. The experience to weld metal together to form a shape I desire, then building my own human in my vision. This experience has taught me a lot, from welding, forming the basic human body shapes, to forming the actual details of the clothing and body of  the statue with modeling clay.

Lino Cuts

I have had past experience with ink printing, but this assignment we were given was a new ball in the ballpark. Using chisels and linos, we got to create our own design we wanted to create. For my first attempt, it wasn't easy. I had cut the crevices too deep so I couldn't do another design on the back. As for inspiration for the first design, I looked at Caravan Palaces new single in November 2023. I took inspiration from the smoke and the robot head entrance to create a lino cut that portrayed a walking robot going through smoke with a glowing eye. This is to give it a powerful, mysterious feeling towards the audience. As for my second lino cut, I used hard lino. This one took more time and effort as it was firmer. For my second design I took inspiration from an art account I had seen making "stylized flowers." So I created flowers in my own style while adding elements of others plants too. The goal of the second lino cut is to show flowers and plants in my own style of art.

Self Portrait

For my third time creating a self-portrait in high school I decided to go for a more difficult way to create a self-portrait, being a front view with hands. In this self-portrait I wanted to show that I felt like I was losing myself. To create this effect I drew the hands like they were dragging me back into an abyss of ooze, losing myself in it. Then my skin was desaturated to make it look like the life inside of me had disappeared, never to be seen again. The main focus on this is to show how my depression can sometimes be.
